May Art Show: Four-Legged Creatures

  • DubHub 1123 Main Street Dublin, NH, 03444 United States (map)

For the month of May, the DubHub/Dublin Community Center is featuring the works of four artists, Kate O’Dell, Joan Barrows, Kate Corr Frame, and Ann Sawyer, each of whom were selected for their compelling artistic portrayals of various four-legged creatures of the animal kingdom.

Kate O’Dell, a primarily self taught artist living in Litchfield NH, studied with watercolorist, Beth Patterson, for over four years. Past and current self study has been in the form of books, videos and trips to museums and galleries. Animals are a favorite subject, and capturing their likeness and personality is always the challenge. Kate paints in watercolor on aquabord – a natural clay surface. The clay mimics paper, allowing that wonderful watercolor luminosity. However, unlike paper, the paintings are varnished, eliminating the need for glass in the frame. Kate’s work has been shown in galleries across New England.

Joan Barrows of Peterborough, NH, studied at the University of Hartford Art School. Her interest over this past year has been in illustrating the native species of New Hampshire. Porcupines, coyotes, ravens, turkeys and others are some of many creatures she has represented in acrylic paint on stretched drop cloth. All are black and white, minimal compositions, often life sized in hopes of successfully illustrating the beings’ beauty and character to the viewer. Joan’s work has been shown on the Monadnock Art Tour, at Oh! Gallery (2021-2024.) and at Bowerbird in Peterborough, NH (on going.)

Kate Corr Frame attended the Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design, and taught at the School of Visual Arts. She pursued a career in advertising in NYC as an Art Director, producing award winning work for clients such as Coke, Sony, Mars, and the United Way, for which she won a Clio. Upon retiring four years ago to Hancock, NH, Kate returned to her passion for painting and finding the beauty in what’s often overlooked or abandoned. Whether it’s wilted flowers, an abandoned shack, or a four-legged friend, Kate paints her subjects with reverence and love. Her work has been shown in galleries across New England.

Ann Sawyer attended Simmons College, majoring in Library Science. In 1960 she came to Jaffrey, N.H. and her husband's dairy farm, in the family since 1858. The dairy herd eventually numbered 225 head, and here on the farm was her joyful subject matter. Time to paint had to be squeezed in between chores, but it is here that she has found inspiration for over 60 years, creating paintings of farm life and a celebration of domestic animals. She loves painting relationships of animals to each other and their caregivers. Good horses, loving cats, affectionate cows, charming chickens, comical pigs, are all part of what she responds to. Ann has studied art at the Sharon Arts Center with noted artists Nora Unwin, Giffin Russell, and Mary Iselin. She has also been on the faculty at Sharon Arts Center, teaching beginning watercolor, and has taught summer classes at East Hill Farm in Troy, N.H.. She has taken numerous workshops with nationally known artists such as Judi Betts, Christopher Shink, Al Broulette, and Ruth Wynn. Ann’s work has received multiple awards, been featured on brochure covers, and she has exhibited widely in many juried shows, both locally and internationally. Ann's book, Inside The Artist's Barn, contains eighty paintings of her animals. The Artist in Monadnock Farmyards with ninety paintings records bits of history of many past and present area farms. Painting these animals and farms is her joy.

This show may be viewed throughout the month of May during open hours or by appointment.
